Every electrical enclosure has a NEMA classification that precisely states what it can tolerate; the key differences between NEMA 1, NEMA 4, and NEMA 4X are not always clear from the NEMA designation number. If an enclosure has a rating that is either too low or too high, customers wind up overpaying for overprotection, or worse, exposing critical sensitive electronics and electric equipment to moisture, dust, or corrosion that will limit its lifespan.

Pro Tip: An IP66-enclosure is not automatically a NEMA 4X, since NEMA ratings have specific corrosion and ice tests. For general indoor applications where basic ingress protection is required, an IP40 server rack enclosure is enough.

Under ANSI/NEMA 250-2020, the classification system includes 20 different types of enclosures, specifying in detail what environmental factors each class can withstand: from dust and water ingress to corrosion and ice formation.

Of these, NEMA 1, NEMA 4, and NEMA 4X are the three most commonly used on specification sheets for everything from general industrial and telecom applications to solar projects. Their range of protection is surprisingly broad.

Type 1 provides protection against dust and dripping non-corrosive liquids to prevent contact with assembled electrical equipment. Type 4 further protects indoor or outdoor equipment against rain, sleet, and hose-directed water. Adding the essential “X” rating to Type 4 results in a corrosion-resistant enclosure which has gone through 600 continuous hours of salt-fog testing.

What each NEMA rating can withstand depends upon the aggressive test conditions specified by the NEMA 250 standard; these test parameters can be precisely described and are not nebulous categories.

NEMA 1 — Indoor Protection Basics

A NEMA 1 is an indoor enclosure providing a certain level of protection for the equipment housed within: namely, protection from accidental contact with the interior user access points and from falling dirt. It protects from dripping or light splashing of non-corrosive liquids as well. That is all. This is not an outdoor use enclosure with a waterproof rating and it’s not a dust-sealing gasket.

Type 1 enclosures are suitable for clean and dry conditions such as servers rooms, inside electrical panel boards and established indoor distribution boards. An IP40 rating server rack enclosure follows the same indoor-only concept for the data centre setting.

NEMA 4 — Full Weather Protection

A NEMA 4 enclosure will be suitable for dust, rain, sleet, windblown dust, intermittent splashing of water, and hose directed water. Its hose test will be the more difficult, requiring 65 GPM from a 1-inch nozzle at a distance of 6ft. Another requirement will be stable ice formation on the outside of the enclosure without its being damaged or the seal compromised.

Rain testing is specified in p. 5.4 of NEMA 250- 5″ per hour for 30 minutes. They are not arbitrary claims-they are pass/fail in the laboratory tests the enclosure must pass maintaining the internal components dry.

NEMA 4X — Weather + Corrosion Resistance

All other items protected to NEMA 4 are covered under NEMA 4X with proven corrosion protection. That 4X is indicated with the letter “X” to denote the enclosure has passed ASTM B117 salt spray testing after 600 hours of continual 5% sodium chloride misting. Tests performed for the remaining 3X enclosures include 1200 hours moist air with CO2 and SO2, and 800 hours salt spray.

Post-scratch test, the enclosure should not exhibit any more pitting than a Type 304 stainless steel specimen run concurrently in the test chamber.

Don’t mistake NEMA 4 or NEMA 4X for the submersion rated enclosures. If you need the equipment to be temporarily submerged (6 ft 30 min), specify NEMA 6. For long-term submersion at a limited depth (NEMA 6P).

Both NEMA 6 and 6P enclosures have independent test criteria not included with the NEMA 4X.

And the single criteria that sets a NEMA 4 apart from a NEMA 4X is corrosion. Both 4 and 4X enclosures have the same protection against water and dust. But unless the NEMA 4 enclosure is made from the special corrosion-resistant materials used in NEMA 4X, you’d end up with corrosion if the paint barrier was breached-anywhere by a scratch, ultraviolet light or coming into contact with chemicals.

In order to claim 4X, the enclosures must withstand the ASTM B117 salt spray test by withstanding a mist of 5% NaCl for 600 hours in a 35°C chamber. Each enclosure must also withstand 1200 hours of moist air containing CO2 and SO2, and then another 800 hours of salt spray cycling. During this time the enclosure surface cannot show pitting any worse than a coupon of 304 SS tested with it.

ASTM B117 salt spray test target: 600 hr salt fog (5% NaCl, 35°C) + 1,200 hr moist SO2/CO2 + 800 hr cyclic salt spray. pass/fail criteria: pits no worse than the type 304 SS coupon being tested concurrently. Overall material choice influences the actual field life—316L stainless steel exceeds 304 in chloride environments above 60°C.

⚠️ Common Mistake

Rather than conclude that a painted enclosure will hold up in a chemical washdown operation, presume it will not. After the coating chips or degrades from a number of chewings with caustic cleaning solutions, the underlying carbon steel rusts away quickly. For chemicals, splash contamination, or washdown include a NEMA 4X enclosure.

📐 Engineering Note

Wall thickness: 14-gauge (1.9 mm) is common for industrial NEMA 4 and 4X builds. Lighter gauge 16-gauge (1.5 mm) is used for NEMA 1 and smaller NEMA 4 enclosures. Consider gasket criteria: silicone extends to −60°C to +230°C, neoprene to −40°C to +120°C general duty, with EPDM best UV and ozone corrosion resistance for outdoor use.

Also double check gasket suitability for any coolant or chemical elements present in the surroundings. ASTM B117 should be used to demonstrate corrosion test of assembly of components.

💡 Pro Tip

If it is NEMA 4X rated and used in a marine environment (less than five miles off the coast) 316L stainless steel should be specified rather than 304. Added molybdenum in 316L offers greatly increased resistance to chloride pitting. A third material that is ideal is: FRP (fiberglass-reinforced polyester) which is both lightweight and inert as well as electrically non-conducting making it far better than most metals for chemical plants and food processing areas.

Sticker price alone is just part of the story. Total cost of ownership (TCO) is all 6 factors and those factors must include operating environment. A NEMA 4 powder coated carbon steel enclosure in a 5 mile away from the coast needs, by itself, replacing every 3-5 years as its coating rapidly degrades and corrosion develops.

In the same operating environment a NEMA 4X 316L stainless steel enclosure may last for 15-20+ years. When considering the equipment lifecycle over 20 years as often required, NEMA 4X will most likely be the most economical option, however more expensive initially than NEMA 4.

⚠️ Common Mistake

Cost saving by choosing a NEMA 1 box for additional telecom applications for use outside. A $200 NEMA 1 shell that fails 6 months outdoors can be much more expensive during the entire deployment cycle than a $500 NEMA 4 unit that performs flawlessly for three years. Always choose the correct enclosure rating for the operating environment.

💡 Pro Tip — TCO Perspective

If you have a corrosive environment but are tight on budget then NEMA 4X in (fiberglass) FRP should be a serious consideration in lieu of stainless steel. FRP enclosures will give full corrosion protection at roughly 2.5× the NEMA 1 price— closing much of the pricing gap with NEMA 4 carbon steel with a much longer and maintenance free life.

Industry-Specific Recommendations

Telecom: Type 3R is the current standard for outdoor telecom enclosures. Consider upgrading to NEMA 4X for the coast or sites located near sources of industrial pollution. Heat load from 5G equipment can also necessitate design of enclosure ventilation other than simply the enclosure rating.

Solar Energy: Inverter, combiner, and disconnect boxes for outdoor solar facilities shall be of NEMA 3R or 4X, according to NEC Article 690 (NFPA 70). 4X is favored for all coils in all lakes. For the coast, use 316L stainless.

Food & Beverage: washdown areas within facilities regulated by USDA and FDA would virtually necessitate NEMA 4X. These enclosures must withstand the rigors of multiple, high-pressure washdowns with caustic substances.

Over-rating NEMA 4X enclosures for indoors, climate-controlled server room environments that NEMA 1 or NEMA 12 would be more than adequate for. That additional NEMA 4 cost premium pays for corrosion resistance in a climate-controlled environment where you will never need it.
